Add some whimsy to your doll's clothing by embellishing with embroidered felt dots! This is an easy DIY project, just follow the steps below.
Don't like to sew? You can purchase the pink and blue coat plus hat sets seen in the photos above by clicking on the links. Handmade dolls shown in the above photos can be found in my shop, PinkGingerKitty.
Here's how to add embroidered felt dots to a doll hat:
Supplies needed for the hat:
Felt pieces in two colors, enough to make two 3/4" (1.9 cm) dots and three 1/2" (1.27 cm) dots.
Embroidery thread, needle
The acrylic felt is from JoAnn's Fabric where you can buy it by the yard as well as 8 1/2" x 11" sheets. The doll hat shown is from my doll hat pattern (instant download, makes 3 styles of hats), available in my shop. You can also modify a doll hat of your own design. See my free tutorial on doll hats here.
I cut my felt dots out freehand but you could draw them in pencil on the back of your felt before cutting them out. Pin the dots to your doll hat in a pleasing pattern.
Knot your thread and thread your embroidery needle. You will be making a cross shape, formed by 4 stitches, on the small dots.
Starting from inside the doll hat, bring your needle up through the center of the first dot (photo 1). Push it back through the hat at the outside of your felt circle. Bring your needle up at the outside of the circle exactly opposite the stitch you just made. Remove the pin to make sewing easier.
Stitch again through the center of your circle to create a straight line across your felt dot (image 2).
From inside the hat come up outside the felt dot again, perpendicular to your first stitch. Push your needle down through the center and come up outside the felt dot, straight across from your latest stitch. (image 3). Push the needle through the center of the dot and tie a knot in your thread. Your first dot is done!
The larger felt dot embroidery starts the same way, with 4 stitches forming a cross. Add 4 additional stitches forming an "X" over your cross. This secures the bigger dots and adds interest to your hat. Knot your thread inside the hat and cut off excess. Continue sewing the circles until all of them are sewn in place.
You can embellish your doll's coat in the same way, using additional felt dots as you wish. I used 11 felt dots in varying sizes on my doll coats. Scroll down for my free doll coat pattern.
