Here is an easy felt flower necklace project to dress up your doll's wardrobe. Little girls might like a matching one to wear as a bracelet or necklace - the project is easy to adapt. Just increase the ribbon length to accommodate their wrist or neck and add an extra flower or two if you feel so inclined.
Dress Up Kitty doll "Juliette" wears a flower as a headband, while Sweet Friend "Chantal" wears her flower as a necklace
You will need the following supplies:
3/8" wide ribbon, enough to go around your doll's head and tie a bow (I used 16" of grosgrain)
Needle and embroidery thread (I use 3 strands of DMC thread when I embroider)
Needle threader, optional
Scissors and/or snips
Flower pattern (PDF available below) or cut your flower pieces out freehand
The pattern is a simple 4-leaf clover shape in 2 sizes with a round dot for the center of your flower. Cut out the layers and stack the biggest flower on the bottom, then the smaller flower at an angle, and add then the center dot. You will embroider through the center of the dot, thereby securing all three layers together. Download the pattern with instructions here: Flower Choker Pattern
Choose felt colors that coordinate with your doll and embroidery thread the contrasts with the center dot of your flower. Consider ribbon color too - what would look cute with your doll's outfit? I use 3/8" grosgrain ribbon because its fairly sturdy and stays tied where I want it.
Cut out the pattern pieces and lay them on your felt. Trace around them with a pencil (I used a white colored pencil) and cut them out. The felt side with the pencil marks will be the back of your flower.
You will be embroidering a shape that looks like an asterisk (*) in the center of your felt flower stack.
Insert your embroidery needle through the back of the felt flower pieces coming up at the center of the circle. Sew down through the stack at the outer edge of the circle between two of the smaller petals. Come up through the center again and stretch the thread straight across from your previous stitch so that it appears as a continuous line. Sew down between the two petals at the edge of the circle.
Repeat the steps coming up through the center and sewing down through the layers at the edge of the circle. You can sew as many lines across the center as pleases you but I find 4 lines or 8 single stitches is usually enough. When you've stitched the layers securely, stitch down through the center of your ribbon with your embroidery thread. Come back up and stitch lightly through the bottom felt layer, making sure it doesn't show on the front of your flower. Make 4-5 stitches through the ribbon and felt before securing with a knot and cutting off the excess thread.
Try the flower necklace on your doll. Does your flower seem a bit big? Using your snips, trim the back petal edges a little smaller, if needed.
Your felt flower necklace is ready to wear! Tie it on your doll and make another one!
I hope this doll necklace project brings you lots of joy on a winter day!
