My parents came here last week to enjoy the sights of Denver and Boulder. Before they arrived my husband and I spruced up the house (touch-up painting of baseboards, adding plants to the garden and cutting back hedges, new towels for the guest bath) so that everything would look pretty and up-to-date. We are enjoying the updates today just as much as they did while they were here.
Before they arrived I painted a large landscape painting in acrylics for our family room from a photo I took last year in Charleston, SC (see lower left shot in photo above and detail below). I wanted a new art piece for this room to tie in our turquoise couch, bought last year. My husband challenged me to find something for under $50 or make it myself. Boy was he surprised when I revealed this to him three days later!
The landscape turned out perfect for the room, adding color and drama to our fireplace wall. I really enjoyed creating the 24" x 24" painting, which feels so different from the small 8 1/2 x 11" paintings I usually make. With encouragement from my family, I bought a few large canvases and I'm already planning my next painting session!
This is back-to-school week for Boulder and the University students will all be back next week. Fall is on the way even though its still summer for a few more weeks.
Here are a few things I want to do before my summer is over:
Visit Munson's farm stand and pick zinnias from their "pick your own" field.
Go to the Lafayette Peach Festival this weekend.
Enjoy Saturday farmer's market shopping: corn, peaches and tomatoes are on my list. Melons are also delicious.
Make gazpacho for yummy lunch fare that is light on calories.
Go to outdoor flea markets and garage sales.
Host an outdoor dinner party before the weather changes.
Enjoy the First Friday Art Walks that take place all around Boulder county.
See the movie Crazy Rich Asians which opens this week. I've read Kevin Kwan's Asian trilogy and loved them all - guilty fun!
Get outside to hike and photograph the change of seasons, with an eye towards painting. Ditto fall flowers.
Plan a winter trip to Palm Springs, CA because I'd love to see how its changed since my last visit years ago.
Make refrigerator pickles and homemade salsa.
Hold a Labor Day sale in my Etsy shop PinkGingerKitty - its happening August 29 - September 3rd if you're interested.
What are your late summer plans?
