Did you know I make custom doll hats? The hats I make for my Garden Party Girl dolls also look cute on other dolls that are 16" - 18" in size. Clients have DM me about making custom hats for their dolls after seeing my Instagram feed. I found I enjoyed collaborating with people to achieve their dream doll hat, so I now offer a custom hat listing in my Etsy shop.
The doll hat pictured above was made for a customer who has a vintage Minnie Mouse doll from the 1930's. The style of my folded felt hat looked similar in size and general shape to the one that originally came with Minnie. We collaborated to create a hat that mimicked the vintage colors of the doll. The felt colors were chosen from Benzie Designs wool blend felt, which is good quality and comes in loads of colors.
After the felt arrived I constructed the hat and mailed it to my client the next day. This hat is made from periwinkle felt with an ochre, lemon and white flower plus a green felt "stem" and yellow ribbon twist. We think it came out very cute and hopefully Minnie likes it too!
Last October I created this spooky "bird nest" fascinator for another client for her articulated doll Daphne. You can see Daphne wearing this hat in my client's Instagram feed here. This collaboration involved her sending me photos of the doll's head along with measurements of the head's diameter and length of it's face. Using those dimensions I was able to create a paper model to test proportions on. It was a fun challenge for me because I generally don't create "dark" doll items but I do enjoy drama!
I splurged on some new felt sheets from Benzie Designs because their color range is so inspiring. These colors spark my imagination and make me want design something spectacular for upcoming spring and summer dolls.
I also found a few sample fabrics recently including this pretty cotton sample by Ralph Lauren. These colors say Mother's Day to me!
