Its been a busy start to summer between visiting with family and catching up with friends and sewing when I am in town. While some travel was for vacation, other travel was necessary to aid my mother-in-law who is in failing health. Every time we think we have a handle on her issues something new crops up. We have to constantly adjust to uncertainty and not make plans too far ahead. Those of you who are the "sandwich generation" between kids and aging parents know this feeling well.
In between the stressful moments I try to breathe deep and feel gratitude for the little things that signal summer is in full swing:
Sunshine at 5:30 am - I am a lark by nature
Linden trees in flower; such a lovely scent!
Strawberry margaritas on our back patio
Roses and daisies that bloom profusely despite the heat
Playful kitties jumping at butterflies outside patio door (they are indoor kitties but they don't let that stop them)
Large pots of herbs I can pick from anytime I want to pump up the flavor of my cooking
A new season of Father Brown Mysteries on PBS
Farmer's markets twice a week here in Boulder
New followers on social media and those customers who purchased doll hats and "Sweet Friend" dolls - thank you for your encouragement!
Watermelon and gazpacho (tastes delicious together!)
One habit I've adopted to celebrate and cool down this summer is making spa waters. We all know we need to drink plenty of water in hot weather but water alone is often boring. Adding fruit, herbs and citrus to your water wakes up your tastebuds and adds healthy vitamins at the same time.
There are lots of spa water recipes on the internet. The photo above features ingredients suggested by the spa at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. The recipe can be found here. Slices of cucumber, strawberries, green apple and mint leaves in water tastes positively refreshing.
While sipping spa water, I did a quick Etsy search and found these summery finds; see below for links.1. Butterfly embroidery transfer by Nancy Nicholson Design 2. Art Print by Carrie Schmitt Design 3. Water bottle holder by Paracord901 4. Leather bracelets by Corinna Maggy Designs 5. Mini coloring book insert for travelers by Yellow Paper House 6. Adirondack chair by Chair Sales
If your goal for summer is healthy fun, give spa waters a try. Its an easy way to give yourself a little lift during a busy season.
