Did you watch the new HGTV show "Secrets of a Stylist" on Saturday? This show features last year's Design Star winner Emily Henson who was a stylist in LA before joining HGTV. A stylist is the person who finds and arranges all the cool stuff setting the mood in photographs of interiors, food or fashion. Stylists for interiors frequently change the look of something dated with new paint or fabric. Which explains why I bought an assortment of vases and weird ceramic items at the thrift store's half price sale, intending to spray paint them spring colors! This is an inexpensive way to get a "color fix". None of the objects shown here were over a dollar (most cost 50 cents) yet the final display is worthy of a baby shower, Easter brunch or casual wedding reception decor ;)
I chose clear glass vases but you can use colored glass if you have it. Be aware that you will be spraying only the outside of the vase so the original color will show at the top of the vase. I don't spray the inside because its not good for flowers. Chose vases with a variety of textures and shapes for a more interesting display.
1-2 cans of all-purpose spray paint in spring colors (Michael's sells a good variety)
Assorted glass and ceramic items
Boxes or a container to spray items in
Place newspaper inside box or other container (I also used a plastic leaf bin) so the excess spray paint is contained. Place 1-2 vases upside down in box. These should be items that will be painted the same color. Change the newspaper in the box if you switch colors.
Spray a light coat of paint over the vases. Depending upon how warm your environment is the paint will dry in about 10 minutes. Spray a second coat and wait for paint to dry again. Turn vase upright and see where extra paint is needed. Don't be too impatient with drying time or the excess paint will drip. Spray as many times as needed to cover vase (my objects took about 3 coats). Having multiple spray boxes makes the process go faster and allows you to paint more than one color at a time. One can of spray paint will cover about 12-15 objects depending upon size. If you do this project with a friend you can share colors.
When they are finished drying, buy some coordinating flowers to fill the vases. Display your handiwork proudly and say "Why thank you, I made that myself!" If you tire of the colors, pick out a new paint and start spraying :)
